Waltham Abbey Leisure Centre

Waltham Abbey Leisure Centre

Places for People Leisure was awarded the contract for design, build operation and maintenance (DBOM) for the leisure centres of Epping Forest Council.

One of the leisure centres involved is the Waltham Abbey Leisure Centre, which Pellikaan built on the location of the former community centre. Therefore, the new centre also has a community room.

Other facilities in this design and build project include a 6 lane 25 meter pool, a learner pool with moveable floor and spectator seating, a gym and dance and spinning studios.the studio can be divided so two classes can take place at the same time, each with their own lighting, air handling, sound system etc.

A compact design was made for the limited space available and the centre has been designed with a green roof to complement the surrounding recreational ground.

Tadworth Leisure Community and Youth Centre

Tadworth Leisure Community and Youth Centre

On the Banstead Athletic Football Club’s training pitch, Pellikaan designed & built a new leisure and community centre and youth centre. Facilities in the new centre include a training and a learner pool with viewing area, gym, studio, community room, crèche, café, sports hall and 4 five-a-side pitches. Also a park play area, skate park and access road were part of the project.

Tadworth Leisure and Community Centre was procured through a two-stage design and build route, and delivered an extensive range of sports facilities, including 25m training pool, learner pool, sports hall, gym, studio, five-a-side pitches, park play area, skate park and access road. The development also includes a creche and café. Further funding was secured from Sport England’s Iconic Facilities Fund, providing the budget to include new regional standard basketball and trampolining facilities. As part of the Tadworth development, a new location was also found for the Phoenix Youth Centre. The youth centre offers a training kitchen, computer area, one-to-on and group work rooms, youth worker office, activity hall, music facilities, a chill-out area, and an outdoor youth area.

This was the second leisure centre Pellikaan has designed and built for client, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, three years after the successful delivery of the award-winning Horley Leisure Centre.

'Oktopus' Leisure Centre Siegburg

'Oktopus' Leisure Centre Siegburg

Pellikaan created an attractive sports fitness, wellness and recreation world, including renovation of an indoor and outdoor swimming pool (50m).

The biggest attraction is the diving centre with Germany’s deepest diving tower of 20.5 m. Diving enthusiasts can go on expeditions in the “Ruins of the sunken, ancient town of Atlantis” built there. The powerful surf complex is a big challenge for surfers. At 60 kilometers per hour the water shoots up to create “the perfect wave”. There is a slide with four “fast tubes”, a huge tyre flume and two turbo flumes, suitable for fast slide contests.

Alongside the fitness area, a spa and wellness area offers a sauna, steam bath, cosmetic treatments and a massage. The “Friendly Cityhotel Oktopus”, joined to the centre, has 57 modern rooms, interesting themed suites, conference rooms and a well styled restaurant with a café, bar and lounge.

The Oktopus is extremely ecologically and economically sound, due to various efficiency measures. The special attractions and the sustainable energy supply concept are guarantees for long-term project success. The Oktopus will thereby set the standard for many centres.

David Lloyd Club Newbury

David Lloyd Club Newbury

Pellikaan won the tender for the Design & Build construction of the new David Lloyd Club in Newbury. Our detailed knowledge and understanding of the requirements and wishes applicable for this type of club contributed to our ability to prepare the winning bid. We used our experience working for the chain on previous projects as well as our expertise gained from operating Club Pellikaan leisure centres in The Netherlands.

The high-end family club in Newbury was fitted with the latest design, equipment and technology. The centre offers an indoor kids pool as well as indoor and outdoor 20 meter pools. The spa area requires separate access and features a hydropool, relax areas, heated benches, steam room and saunas, an ice machine and a feature shower. Also access to the sauna garden with outdoor hydropool is through the spa area. On the second floor, two large studios and a dedicated spinning studio find their place, alongside a large gym and two squash courts. Of course, there is outdoor and covered tennis at this David Lloyd Club as well. Changing areas, a DLicious bar/restaurant area and lounge and a modern DL Kids zone complete the offer.

Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre

Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre

Design & Build construction of the new Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre, which includes a training pool, learner pool, gym, dance and cycle studios. The centre is unique in its design and is sympathetic to the history of the old baths which used to sit on the same site. The site is tightly located in a very vibrant area between a library and a school building.

That meant that it was extra important to get the build programme just right. Each delivery had to be right on time, so the materials could be used in the building right away; and at the same time, all works needed to be on schedule, so the goods that were being delivered did not need to be stored on site waiting to be used. We uses lean planning techniques and extremely short communication lines to ensure the successful delivery of the project.

The project is part of a Design, Build, Operate and Maintain (DBOM) contract awarded to Places for People Leisure by Birmingham City Council.

Pool Stadspark Turnhout

Pool Stadspark Turnhout

After years of vacancy, this Belgian swimming pool received a thorough facelift and extension of facilities. Structural improvement works were done to the basement, pool basins, floors and plant rooms, and the used technology guarantees a final and sustainable solution for the pool. To deal with ground water issues, 1680 cubic meters of concrete was used, that is approximately 4 million kilos.

The leisure pool has a great offer for all ages, with a kids world, a fun- and leisure zone and a 25 meter training pool and a learner pool – both with moveable floor. The wellness area has a whirlpool, sauna and three steam rooms. Especially the play world and the 74 meter long slide stand out. The slide has three dimensional effects, for which the user can pick their own theme, like Halloween or disco. Or you can choose to score as many points as possible along the way by touching specific places of the slide.

The restaurant area offers views offer the kids world and the 25 meter pool. Outside, a spray park was realised.

This DBFMO project was realised together with ESSA engineers and architects, and with operator Optisport, who will operate the pool for 20 years.

AQUApark Oberhausen

AQUApark Oberhausen

The design for AQUApark was inspired by the views of the drilling rig of a close-by coalmine. This provided the theme for the interior design. A replica of the drilling rig is the focal point and features under a (40m diameter) glass dome. The past relationship with mining is implemented in a stylish, playful way. A fantastic example of this is the unique 100 meter long Blackhole-slide, that leads to a realistic mine scene.

The AQUApark is widely dominated by the glass dome, with its changeable light effects it is the ultimate in aesthetics for the evenings. The lighting plan contributes to the exterior area. During the daytime the dome is opened in fine weather, giving visitors an open-air feel for maximum comfort on sunnier days.

The tropical pool area includes a number of swimming, fun and recreation areas. Some of the facilities are a leisure pool, a training pool, an outdoor pool and a children’s pool. The many slides, including Europe’s longes X-tube, and large sunbathing area with terrace will ensure fun all year round. This huge facility also offers a range of other amenities including a bar, bistro and shops.

Due to its efficient and sustainable energy system the pool is highly economic.

Sennocke Centre Sevenoaks

Sennocke Centre Sevenoaks

At Sevenoaks, a new sports centre was built as an extension of the existing tennis hall. The hall remained in use during part of the construction of the new centre. The refurbishment of the hall was scheduled late in the planning, so it could remain open as long as possible.

The existing tennis hall at Sevenoaks School was refurbished with new carpets, lighting etc.

The new centre offers the students a wide range of facilities such as a multi-purpose sports hall, six-lane swimming pool, fitness, dance, squash and tennis.

With the sports hall viewing gallery, poolside seating and social areas the audience can be made very welcome.
