Extended school De Ring, IJmuiden

Extended school De Ring, IJmuiden

The replacement sports hall in IJmuiden is located in the new extended school centre the Ring, along with a sports café, primary school and play group. A winding plinth connects the building’s parts. A lot of possibilities were created for education and sports to function optimally by linking areas and sharing provisions. Each user can be recognised by their use of colour and each has its own entry leading to the shared area in the heart of the building.

Environmental measures far beyond guidelines
Design elements like the compact shape of the building, high insulation values and use of natural light reduce the use of energy. In addition, the Ring has sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies including a sedum roof, solar panels and solar-powered boilers. Also, by adding mass to the construction, an consistent indoor climate is created. Furthermore, thermal energy storage is applied in the piling (geothermal piles). 255 of 355 piles are connected to the heating system.

At its own clubs, Pellikaan uses the BaOpt system (Bauer Optimisation). This is the first time we installed it for an external client. BaOpt is a high-tech regulating system for indoor climate installations, based on the latest control- and sensor technologies. It takes the occupancy in the rooms into account and keeps air quality perfect that way. Installations with BaOpt used less energy than the others.

Using these and other technologies, the Ring has a GPR score (municipal guidelines for sustainability) of 9.04 whilst only 6 is required.

Sports Centre Papendrecht

Sports Centre Papendrecht

The council chose Pellikaan’s plan for this new sports complex because it best addressed the demands for facility mix and sustainability. The outdoor pool complex has a toddler’s pool, water play ground and leisure pool with slides as well as a competition pool with a separate diving part. These pools are surrounded by a large green relaxing area ans sports field. The indoor swimming pools have a competition pool, learner’s pool and toddler’s pool.

The double sports hall can be divided in six parts, has spectator seating as well as a viewing gallery and is suitable to host large events. All functionalities are accessible from a large entrance area. Centrally in the building is a large café-restaurant with direct access to the spectator seating. A car park as well as an underground bicycle parking are part of the package.

The complete project has sustainable features involving heat and energy generation, isolation, lighting, water use and choice of materials. Some features are triple insulation, heat recovery from air and water, low-energy lighting, self-closing water taps, waste water treatmnent system, pool filters with a reduced resistance and a solar boiler.

Sports Centre Papendrecht offers more than 9000 square meters of indoor leisure and professional sports facilities, over 7000 square meters outdoor sports and leisure facilities, approximately 2500 m2 water surface and about 2500m2 sports flooring: a valuable addition for the community.

Hinckley Leisure Centre

Hinckley Leisure Centre

The PPP contract for design, construction and operation of Hinckley’s new leisure centre was won by Places for People, who partnered up with Robert Limbrick Architects and Pellikaan. In one of the council’s press releases, Council Leader, Stuart Bray, said: “Residents will get outstanding facilities (…) and a significant financial return over and above the cost of delivery, which will support other services for the next 20 years. This is a clear ‘win-win’ for local people!”

The 8-lane, 25 metre main pool with viewing areas as well as the learner pool have moveable floors. Further wet facilities include a family splash area and sauna and steam rooms. The dry sports facilities include an 8-court sports hall, large gym and several dance and spinning studios. In addition there is a multipurpose / meeting room, a café and dedicated office space for the operator as well as the council. The area around the new leisure centre is landscaped and a clear, grassed play area suitable for school and community use was formed, as well as car parking facilities.

Arnhemhal Papendal

Arnhemhal Papendal

As part of the master plan for Olympic Training Park Papendal, the fourth Dutch Centre for Top Sports and Education in The Netherlands was specifically designed as a training centre for elite athletes.

Apart from two connected sports halls (24 x 44 m each – 88m together), there are dedicated halls for sprint (130m), athletics and combat sports. The strength and recovery areas are amongst the best in Europe with regard to quality of finishes and services as well as size. The restaurant offers individual nutritious advice for the athletes, special attention was paid for paralympians, and in the sports hall, high-speed cameras with GPS and the latest measuring technology will be provided to optimise the athletes’ coaching.

Sustainable
Whilst developing the plan, sustainability has been a key theme. The is reflected in the choice of materials, such as low maintenance preserved timber cladding. In addition, the hall has very high insulation values and energy saving installations including thermal energy storage. These installations are used for the entire Papendal Training Park. Even the heat from the kitchen air is recovered.

BIM
Pellikaan and the design team worked with Building Information Modeling (BIM). Information of all parties, from architect and structural engineer to M&E engineers braught together in a 3D model of the building. The bid advantage is that the different works fit in with eachother perfectly from the start.

Whitgift School Sports Centre Croydon

Whitgift School Sports Centre Croydon

The new state-of-the-art sports complex for the Whitgift School offers more than twenty sports to national standard! The 44x28m sports hall with moveable partition is suitable for many sports varying from volleyball to cricket-practise. Games on the basketball show court can be supported from the viewing galleries.

To create optimum multipurpose use of the available space dividing walls were also used in other areas. The squash courts walls can be moved and the swimming pool is suitable for competitions as well as learning. The eight-lane pool is provided with timing equipment as well as a moveable floor.

Further facilities include fitness, class rooms, offices, physio, multi-purpose areas and a kitchen. The centre is located on the school premises and was built while the school was operated normally. Creating a building suitable for use by school children was important. Vandalism proof materials were used without compromising the design and an optimum teaching environment was created through high standard acoustic provisions.

The initial design for this project came in well above budget. Pellikaan was able to take this design and amend it, saving sufficient money to accommodate the available budget whilst still offering all required facilities.

Watford Woodside & Central

Watford Woodside & Central

In Watford, Pellikaan completed a £ 22m contract for two leisure centres at Central and Woodside. At Central, the existing swimming pool centre in the town centre has been replaced by a new sports centre. This encompasses a sports hall, 25 meter pool, children’s pool, climbing wall, crèche, café, fitness and dance.

At Woodside, Pellikaan have redeveloped the 30-year-old leisure centre and added an extension for ‘wet’ facilities including a swimming pool with moveable floor, learner pool and sauna. The existing sports hall was refurbished, creating a warm atmosphere, high durability and excellent acoustic performance. Other facilities include health and fitness, café, treatment rooms, artificial pitch, dance studio, crèche, squash courts etc.

Sustainability was a key consideration in the design. This resulted in the international Green Apple Award. The measures implemented ensure lower carbon emission rates as well as more economical running costs. Some examples are insulation levels, a solar thermal array, rainwater recycling and heat recovery systems. The extended ground source heat pump system, using boreholes of approx. 100 metres deep, enables use of the natural heat of the earth. Furthermore, heat loss and emission of carbon dioxide by air leakage were reduced significantly.

Cate Hall, Corporate Director at Watford Borough Council: “Great partnership working enabled us to deliver very high quality buildings that everyone is proud of, which are on time and on budget.”
