Hallenbad Oberhausen

Hallenbad Oberhausen

The pool hall has an exceptionally transparent concept with large glass elevations and wide canopies in a modern architectural style. The large, open pool area, is dominated by the high red columns which divide the area in two parts. The front part has a 25m competition pool, whilst the back part has a learner pool and a diving pool with steel diving tower. The changing areas are spacious and colourful, and the first floor offices and meeting rooms look out on the pools.

The wooden wall materials make for a warm and quiet atmosphere; the large grey concrete columns situated right next to the glass façade show strictness and stability. The entrance lobby has a practical layout. It has two-storey high glass walls, where eye-catching red elements give a welcoming feel.

The district heating, solar panels and pool water treatment system with UV light and electrolysis are fully automated and have already proved their value. The ecological and economical brief was translated to a future-ready swimming pool.

Whitgift School Sports Centre Croydon

Whitgift School Sports Centre Croydon

The new state-of-the-art sports complex for the Whitgift School offers more than twenty sports to national standard! The 44x28m sports hall with moveable partition is suitable for many sports varying from volleyball to cricket-practise. Games on the basketball show court can be supported from the viewing galleries.

To create optimum multipurpose use of the available space dividing walls were also used in other areas. The squash courts walls can be moved and the swimming pool is suitable for competitions as well as learning. The eight-lane pool is provided with timing equipment as well as a moveable floor.

Further facilities include fitness, class rooms, offices, physio, multi-purpose areas and a kitchen. The centre is located on the school premises and was built while the school was operated normally. Creating a building suitable for use by school children was important. Vandalism proof materials were used without compromising the design and an optimum teaching environment was created through high standard acoustic provisions.

The initial design for this project came in well above budget. Pellikaan was able to take this design and amend it, saving sufficient money to accommodate the available budget whilst still offering all required facilities.

Pasteur Institute

Pasteur Institute

The characteristics of the former Pasteur Institute were preserved and renovated while a highly modern office building was constructed behind the façade. Located in the European Area of Brussels, this prestigious project now houses the Bavarian Representation to the European Community. The original castle and villa now offer offices and a multipurpose room for up to 250 people.

Extensions are characterised by their contemporary architecture made of steel and glass with a minimalist approach and a lot of transparency. The lightness and the contrast of the materials highlight the historical character and details of the existing buildings.

The exceptionally high finishes level used in this project give the offices a luxurious feel. All layouts, materials and techniques were carefully chosen to complement and enhance the existing surroundings. This is a truly impressive site.

David Lloyd Club Ukkel

David Lloyd Club Ukkel

David Lloyd Ukkel is located in the majestic, leafy setting of a château to the south of Brussels. David Lloyd chose to renovate the burnt out castle to provide a breathtaking back drop for the fitness, pool and spa. The castle is a listed building and Pellikaan refurbished it, restoring the characteristics of the building, based on postcards and other sources of information.

In order not to interrupt the setting, the indoor tennis hall was constructed under the underground car park and the new buildings (fitness and pool areas) were situated down the sloping terrain so the view from the road stayed the same.

The luxurious feel is continued in the high quality finishes throughout the building. With over three hectares of grounds and 10,000m2 indoors, the centre includes a gym, studios, tennis courts, four swimming pools, jacuzzi, saunas and a Turkish bath. There are also crèche, a restaurant and bar, a beauty salon and a hairdresser’s. The outdoor pool can be viewed through the glass wall from the fitness suites or indoor pool and visa versa. The outdoor pool is heated all year round to provide the ultimate comfort and usage.

This truly unique project is an authentic, aesthetic treasure.

Kelmis Swimming Pool

Kelmis Swimming Pool

Close to where Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany meet, we built a highly energy efficient swimming pool. The layout is very efficient in terms of overview, with great lines of vision. From the pool attendants room, at the entry cash register, you can see not only the pool, but also the entrance, the cafeteria and the changing areas. This significantly reduces the number of staff required. Once on the inside, visitors can use a competition pool, training pool, children’s pool and cafeteria. The pool offers the same possibilities to disabled people because measures were taken including chair lifts and special pool entry stairs.

Energy efficient
Much attention was paid to the environment as well, which will lead to lower operating costs. Measures include high insulation, pool covers to reduce loss of heat, water saving controls on showers, rainwater harvesting systems, heat regeneration, low-energy lighting and solar panels. In addition 70% of the swimming pool water is re-used via a custom made water treatment installation.

Watford Woodside & Central

Watford Woodside & Central

In Watford, Pellikaan completed a £ 22m contract for two leisure centres at Central and Woodside. At Central, the existing swimming pool centre in the town centre has been replaced by a new sports centre. This encompasses a sports hall, 25 meter pool, children’s pool, climbing wall, crèche, café, fitness and dance.

At Woodside, Pellikaan have redeveloped the 30-year-old leisure centre and added an extension for ‘wet’ facilities including a swimming pool with moveable floor, learner pool and sauna. The existing sports hall was refurbished, creating a warm atmosphere, high durability and excellent acoustic performance. Other facilities include health and fitness, café, treatment rooms, artificial pitch, dance studio, crèche, squash courts etc.

Sustainability was a key consideration in the design. This resulted in the international Green Apple Award. The measures implemented ensure lower carbon emission rates as well as more economical running costs. Some examples are insulation levels, a solar thermal array, rainwater recycling and heat recovery systems. The extended ground source heat pump system, using boreholes of approx. 100 metres deep, enables use of the natural heat of the earth. Furthermore, heat loss and emission of carbon dioxide by air leakage were reduced significantly.

Cate Hall, Corporate Director at Watford Borough Council: “Great partnership working enabled us to deliver very high quality buildings that everyone is proud of, which are on time and on budget.”

Community Centre Bilk Düsseldorf

Community Centre Bilk Düsseldorf

On the site of the former Bilk train station, Pellikaan has created an attractive community centre.

The large three-storey community centre offers a variety of authority services. There is a register office and a community hall with an event room. Also the council of Düsseldorf Borough of Bilk house their offices in the new building. The community can enjoy the facilities at the city library and reader’s café.

The swimming pool offers training and learner pools with moveable floors and a diving platform. It stands out for its straight lines, simple elegance and bright materials. The water quality is guaranteed by an electrolytic chlorine generator and the pool uses energy saving materials and techniques, which significantly reduce operation costs.

This is a modern complex with interesting external wall cladding, use of split levels, bright rooms, glass facades and friendly interior decoration. The natural light is used to its full potential on a daytime. Light shines into the pool through the rectangular glass roof, the so called lantern. At night the centre is most impressive. The light shines out and creates an art piece with the glass and views into the centre a focal point.

Hotel Van der Valk, Uden

Hotel Van der Valk, Uden

The new four-star Van der Valk hotel Uden-Veghel is situated close to a hospital and has direct access to a busy highway. It opened months prior to the original opening date. As Harry Heinrichs of Van der Valk mentioned during the opening ceremony, it was the collaboration between the passionate Van der Valk and Pellikaan families that enabled the hotel to open its doors for guests within 8 months after start of construction. The implementation of collaborative planning techniques (Lean construction) in our organisation has definately also contributed to that.

The three floors harbour 105 hotel rooms and 11 areas for meetings presentations and conferences. The restaurant and conference rooms are situated in the front. the hotel rooms are devided in two wings to the back. Two large terraces by a pond maark the front elevation. Of course, sufficient parking areas have been provided.

The design takes into account the environment. As an example, a sound barrier reduces the noise from the highway. Part of the building has a green roof, and solar panels were installed.

Sea Life Centres

Sea Life Centres

Pellikaan built the first Sea Life aquarium in Konstanz, Germany, 1998. We have since built Sea Life Centres in Hannover and Speyer also. Visitors can explore the fascinating underwater world of native as well as exotic waters in the large fresh and saltwater aquariums. The various habitats have been recreated in a detailed and true-to-nature manner in high-quality tanks.  Some 5,000 animals of more then 100 species can be seen at each centre. Spectacular highlights include an 8 meter long glass tunnel walkway through a 5 meter high 300,000 litre tank, where you can watch stingrays and sharks at close range.

For the design of each Sea Life Centre, particular attention was given to the choice of environmentally friendly materials and systems. The harmoniously integrated water tanks have been designed to enable the animals to feel at home in their real, natural environment.
