Sports Centre Papendrecht

Sports Centre Papendrecht

The council chose Pellikaan’s plan for this new sports complex because it best addressed the demands for facility mix and sustainability. The outdoor pool complex has a toddler’s pool, water play ground and leisure pool with slides as well as a competition pool with a separate diving part. These pools are surrounded by a large green relaxing area ans sports field. The indoor swimming pools have a competition pool, learner’s pool and toddler’s pool.

The double sports hall can be divided in six parts, has spectator seating as well as a viewing gallery and is suitable to host large events. All functionalities are accessible from a large entrance area. Centrally in the building is a large café-restaurant with direct access to the spectator seating. A car park as well as an underground bicycle parking are part of the package.

The complete project has sustainable features involving heat and energy generation, isolation, lighting, water use and choice of materials. Some features are triple insulation, heat recovery from air and water, low-energy lighting, self-closing water taps, waste water treatmnent system, pool filters with a reduced resistance and a solar boiler.

Sports Centre Papendrecht offers more than 9000 square meters of indoor leisure and professional sports facilities, over 7000 square meters outdoor sports and leisure facilities, approximately 2500 m2 water surface and about 2500m2 sports flooring: a valuable addition for the community.

Hallenbad Oberhausen

Hallenbad Oberhausen

The pool hall has an exceptionally transparent concept with large glass elevations and wide canopies in a modern architectural style. The large, open pool area, is dominated by the high red columns which divide the area in two parts. The front part has a 25m competition pool, whilst the back part has a learner pool and a diving pool with steel diving tower. The changing areas are spacious and colourful, and the first floor offices and meeting rooms look out on the pools.

The wooden wall materials make for a warm and quiet atmosphere; the large grey concrete columns situated right next to the glass façade show strictness and stability. The entrance lobby has a practical layout. It has two-storey high glass walls, where eye-catching red elements give a welcoming feel.

The district heating, solar panels and pool water treatment system with UV light and electrolysis are fully automated and have already proved their value. The ecological and economical brief was translated to a future-ready swimming pool.

Kelmis Swimming Pool

Kelmis Swimming Pool

Close to where Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany meet, we built a highly energy efficient swimming pool. The layout is very efficient in terms of overview, with great lines of vision. From the pool attendants room, at the entry cash register, you can see not only the pool, but also the entrance, the cafeteria and the changing areas. This significantly reduces the number of staff required. Once on the inside, visitors can use a competition pool, training pool, children’s pool and cafeteria. The pool offers the same possibilities to disabled people because measures were taken including chair lifts and special pool entry stairs.

Energy efficient
Much attention was paid to the environment as well, which will lead to lower operating costs. Measures include high insulation, pool covers to reduce loss of heat, water saving controls on showers, rainwater harvesting systems, heat regeneration, low-energy lighting and solar panels. In addition 70% of the swimming pool water is re-used via a custom made water treatment installation.

Community Centre Bilk Düsseldorf

Community Centre Bilk Düsseldorf

On the site of the former Bilk train station, Pellikaan has created an attractive community centre.

The large three-storey community centre offers a variety of authority services. There is a register office and a community hall with an event room. Also the council of Düsseldorf Borough of Bilk house their offices in the new building. The community can enjoy the facilities at the city library and reader’s café.

The swimming pool offers training and learner pools with moveable floors and a diving platform. It stands out for its straight lines, simple elegance and bright materials. The water quality is guaranteed by an electrolytic chlorine generator and the pool uses energy saving materials and techniques, which significantly reduce operation costs.

This is a modern complex with interesting external wall cladding, use of split levels, bright rooms, glass facades and friendly interior decoration. The natural light is used to its full potential on a daytime. Light shines into the pool through the rectangular glass roof, the so called lantern. At night the centre is most impressive. The light shines out and creates an art piece with the glass and views into the centre a focal point.

Sunderland Swimming Pools

Sunderland Swimming Pools

Sunderland City Council chose Pellikaan to build two 25m swimming pools based on design and cost: it was the most economically advantageous proposal.

The old Hetton Leisure Complex was demolished to make way for the Coalfields Swimming Pool. The new centre has a 25-meter pool with viewing area, a learner pool, fitness, sauna area, reception and changing facilities. The décor is light, fresh and airy and the exterior is aesthetically pleasing, with strong angles and curves: a contradicting combination that really works.

Sunderland South Swimming Pool was joined to the existing Sunderland Tennis Centre. The centre remained open during construction. To ensure that the users were not disturbed, a lot of planning, communication and co-ordination took place. A new 25 meter pool with various changing areas and ancillaries enhances the sports offer. Part of the existing centre were also refurbished, a new shared entrance, seating and reception area were realised. Externally a fantastic adventure play area was established.

Family Pool and Wellness Centre Mölln

Family Pool and Wellness Centre Mölln

At the location of the previous spa baths in Mölln, Pellikaan built a new pool and sauna centre. The design concept of Geising & Böker splits the building horizontally in a heavy pedestal and a light, floating top, that appears to be flowing in the wind between the trees.

The pool targets athletes, non-swimmers and parents with children. Therefore a 25 meter pool was created as well as a play- and learner pool with hydrotherapy, and that is suitable for aquacycling as well as swimming lessons. For the little ones, a play area was created. There is ample space to relax as well.

The sauna area has two saunas and a steam room. Very spacious relax areas have been set up in this section of the centre. The open fireplace and the sauna garden complete the offer.

Towers Health & Racquets Club, Bedford

Towers Health & Racquets Club, Bedford

The squash club closed, gym facilities moved toward the budget end of the market, a tennis club closed and there were no permanent indoor tennis courts around. Enough reason for Matthew Towers in Bedford to make a commitment to himself, that if he was ever in a position to improve the racquets and gym facilities in his town, he would make it happen.

Now, many years later, it happened: Bedford got a high-end health & racquets club with no less than 3 indoor and 4 outdoor tennis courts, 4 squash courts, a gym, high energy studio, mind & body studio and a state-of-the-art spin studio. The wet side of the centre will have a 20 meter pool, sauna, steam room, feature shower and hydropool. Further relaxation can be found upstairs in the wellness treatment rooms, or in the bar/café area, where you can find a quiet area as well as a dedicated kids club.

Knowhow, ideas, inspiration and facts were gathered making good use of the operating experience of Pellikaan in Holland. For this design & build project, we work with Hooper Architects and during the design development, the team visited several Club Pellikaan centres, adding valuable insights about the operational consequences of the design.

Matthew Towers: “We will be trying to create a club that caters for families, whilst at the same time offering adult individuals the health club experience that they desire.  We are aiming to stimulate a renaissance in squash in the area, drive increased tennis participation, and make Bedford a healthier and happier place to live. If we could produce one or two players who go on to national recognition, that would be a bonus. Not too ambitious then!!”

School, rehabilitation and sports

Heliomare Child and Youth Centre:
In this new Child- and Youth Centre,  children and young adults with special needs will find a school for special needs education that also offers facilities for rehabilitation, sports and movement. And to add to all that, the high-tech Regional Expert Centre offers outpatient treatment. Therefore, in addition to the usual school facilities, this centre has dedicated sports and movement areas, a hydrotherapy pool and rehabilitation rooms.

Every functionality of the building has its own domain, with its own entrance, but everybody comes together at the plaza. This large, high area houses the restaurant and has views to every domain.

Heemskerk Multipurpose Sports Centre:
A separate part of the building is the Multipurpose Sports Centre. During the daytime, this is used by primary school pupils from the area as well as Heliomare’s primary and secondary school students. The Heemskerk Council’s new sports hall is built to Dutch Olympic Committee standards and therefore also excellently suited for use by local sports clubs.

Engineer, Build, Maintain: the design by Architectenbureau Marlies Rohmer was further developed by our team before construction. After hand-over, Pellikaan remains responsible for maintenance of the building for 12 years.
