Mondriaan Sports Hall Delft

Mondriaan Sports Hall Delft

The Mondriaan Sports Hall will be realised at the Sports and Movement College in Delft, The Netherlands. With their own sports hall, fitness and studio, students can now take these important classes at their own location rather than having to travel. Clubs with which the school has apprenticeship or training agreements can also use the hall.

Full-electric and energy-neutral

The Design & Build tender was judged on design, quality and sustainability. Therefore Architects Bureau Bos and Pellikaan paid extra attention to the technical design. This is one of the first full-electric sports halls in Holland: no gas required. All air and water is heated electronically.

Measures to minimise use of electricity include thermal energy storage, heat pumps, LED lighting etc. By installing a large amount of PV cells on the roof, the building produces all the electricity it needs.

Sunderland Swimming Pools

Sunderland Swimming Pools

Sunderland City Council chose Pellikaan to build two 25m swimming pools based on design and cost: it was the most economically advantageous proposal.

The old Hetton Leisure Complex was demolished to make way for the Coalfields Swimming Pool. The new centre has a 25-meter pool with viewing area, a learner pool, fitness, sauna area, reception and changing facilities. The décor is light, fresh and airy and the exterior is aesthetically pleasing, with strong angles and curves: a contradicting combination that really works.

Sunderland South Swimming Pool was joined to the existing Sunderland Tennis Centre. The centre remained open during construction. To ensure that the users were not disturbed, a lot of planning, communication and co-ordination took place. A new 25 meter pool with various changing areas and ancillaries enhances the sports offer. Part of the existing centre were also refurbished, a new shared entrance, seating and reception area were realised. Externally a fantastic adventure play area was established.

Sports Hall Hoffenheim „Am großen Wald“

Sports Hall Hoffenheim „Am großen Wald“

On the location of the old school sports hall in Hoffenheim, a new 2 storey sports hall was erected.

Most of the ground floor is used for an indoor artificial football pitch for the youth teams of Bundesliga Club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Apart from that, there is a sprint track and gym areas for strength and coordination trainings.

The first floor is a full height sports hall which can be separated in three parts for simultaneous use by multiple groups. The hall, which has the floor markings for all usual indoor sports, also has an extractable climbing wall.

The changing areas and storage areas are accessible for all, just like the rest op the building. The large glass elevation ensures that the Foyer offers a good atmosphere for events for the school and the sports clubs using the building.

This is the second project that Pellikaan built with the Dietmar Hopp Foundation, the first was a school sports hall in St-Leon Rot.

Club Pellikaan

Club Pellikaan

In The Netherlands, Pellikaan operates a number of health clubs. The experience gained from developing, financing and operating our own racquet centres and health clubs since  is an important asset for our Design & Build work. Feedback from staff as well as members adds valuable knowledge to those responsible for the design and planning of new sports facilities.

Always on the forefront

Since the opening of the first Pellikaan Tennis Centre in 1975, a lot has changed. The operating concept was further developed through time and in 1994 the first membership club in The Netherlands opened: a Pellikaan Health & Racquet Club.

The chain is now called Club Pellikaan and has a frontrunner role in the industry. Also at that first centre dating back to 1975.

With seven Clubs Pellikaan in The Netherlands and over 40 years of operating experience under the belt, it is second nature for us to translate every day experience into appropriate and cost effective architectural and technical solutions.

Club Pellikaan

The clubs of Club Pellikaan offer fitness area, aerobics, spinning, squashes, indoor and outdoor tennis. The wet areas have swimming pools, sauna, steam, sunbeds, relax pools etc. The clubs also offer a variety of activities for the Children’s Clubs, with play areas as well as dedicated sports facilities.

Construction

We have built new clubs in Amersfoort, Apeldoorn and Maastricht, but we also extended and refurbished existing tennis centres in Tilburg, Almere and Goirle. Finally, we stripped and fitted out a former casino in Breda.

School, rehabilitation and sports

Heliomare Child and Youth Centre:
In this new Child- and Youth Centre,  children and young adults with special needs will find a school for special needs education that also offers facilities for rehabilitation, sports and movement. And to add to all that, the high-tech Regional Expert Centre offers outpatient treatment. Therefore, in addition to the usual school facilities, this centre has dedicated sports and movement areas, a hydrotherapy pool and rehabilitation rooms.

Every functionality of the building has its own domain, with its own entrance, but everybody comes together at the plaza. This large, high area houses the restaurant and has views to every domain.

Heemskerk Multipurpose Sports Centre:
A separate part of the building is the Multipurpose Sports Centre. During the daytime, this is used by primary school pupils from the area as well as Heliomare’s primary and secondary school students. The Heemskerk Council’s new sports hall is built to Dutch Olympic Committee standards and therefore also excellently suited for use by local sports clubs.

Engineer, Build, Maintain: the design by Architectenbureau Marlies Rohmer was further developed by our team before construction. After hand-over, Pellikaan remains responsible for maintenance of the building for 12 years.

David Lloyd Club Farnham

This new addition to the David Lloyd chain offers the broad range of facilities we have come to expect in these high-quality clubs. Various indoor and outdoor racquet sports, wellness and beauty area, several indoor and outdoor swimming pools and fitness and dance. The space reserved for restaurant, meeting room, lounge, crèche, family room etc completes the package and makes David Lloyd Clubs what they are: genuine family clubs.

At this location though, David Lloyd Leisure created the group’s largest Amida Spa. Due to Pellikaan’s wealth of experience with such facilities on the European mainland, we have proved a valuable partner in the development of this concept for David Lloyd Leisure.

Glass Mill Leisure Centre Lewisham

Glass Mill Leisure Centre Lewisham

The Glass Mill Leisure Centre is situated on the lowest three floors of a 27 storey apartment building in Lewisham. There is a competition pool with spectator seating and a judgement platform and a 20 meter learner pool, both with movable floors. On the first floor a gym and two dance studios are located as well as a wellness area with treatment rooms, sauna and steam room. Further areas include a club room, climbing wall, crèche, reception/café area and meeting rooms. The centre won the award for Best Built Project – Community Scale at the London Planning Awards.

The finishes of the elevation are particularly interesting: 1400 glass panels in ten colours are illuminated from above. The lighting responds to the sounds outside the building, such as traffic, trains and pedestrians. The pattern for the panels was made by an artist.

Louis Davids Carré, Zandvoort

Louis Davids Carré, Zandvoort

At the redevelopment of this square in down town Zandvoort, Pellikaan is responsible for large part of the development including the underground car park for 511 cars, 48 appartments, two schools, a public library, a sports hall, city offices and a multipurpose area for social and cultural activities.

The integration of these different buildings with their individual purposes, requires a thorough plan for accessibility, routing and safety in and around the buildings. During the development phase, Pellikaan used its great experience as operator of various buildings to find the best solutions. That experience was also used to ensure optimum long-term use of the buildings, for example through choices regarding services engineering and materials.

Examples are the hypermodern ventilation system for a healthy learning climate, LED lighting in the garage, the use of solar panels and the underground thermal energy storage.
